Draft Winners & Losers

WINNERS

Dak Prescott: Most people don't realize that he finished 2019 as the QB2 behind only Lamar Jackson, and the Cowboys just replaced Randall Cobb with arguably the best wide receiver in this draft class. If Dallas continues to air it out under new head coach Mike McCarthy, then Dak has an outside chance to be THE QB1 in 2020.

Joe Burrow: All the Bengals have done since last season has prepared to surround their franchise quarterback with talent. They could have traded A.J. Green, but opted to keep him around to help bolster that offense. Then during the draft they added Tee Higgins, a similar type player to Green to be his eventual replacement. Burrow is in a great position to succeed in 2020.

Drew Lock: John Elway did as much as a GM can do to surround his franchise quarterback with talent at the skills positions. First with adding Melvin Gordon during Free Agency, then taking Jerry Jeudy with the 15th overall pick and again taking a wide receiver, K.J. Hamler in the 2nd round of the draft. Pair that with second-year standout Noah Fant and Phillip Lindsay, and Lock could make a case for a backend QB1 in 2020.

Derek Carr: Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock are putting everything on Carr this year. They made a somewhat controversial pick with Henry Ruggs at pick 12, and then added Lynn Bowden Jr. and Bryan Edwards in the third round. There is a lot of potential in this receiving core to add to what they already have in Josh Jacobs and Darren Waller. It's a make or break year for Carr.

Miles Sanders: The Eagles did nothing to address the running back position during the draft, which surprised me considering how much Doug Pederson has used a committee approach. To me that says a lot about how they feel about Miles Sanders. He's in for a big year.

LOSERS

Marlon Mack: The writing is on the wall for Mack after the Colts selected Jonathan Taylor in the 2nd round. He is set to be a free agent at the end of the season and I don't expect he will be back in Indy. Mack is a good back (when healthy), but he's nothing special. The Colts essentially got a bigger, faster and more durable version. Don't be surprised if Mack is playing behind Taylor when the season kicks off. He is the biggest loser for me of any player during the draft.

Ronald Jones: Bruce Arians has said this offseason how he wants running backs who can catch the football and pass block. He wants a back that won't come off the field. That back is not Ronald Jones, who never caught more than 14 balls during any season at USC. Keyshawn Vaughn can catch, which was evident by his 28 receptions last season at Vanderbilt, and is a good pass blocker. That tells you all you need to know.

Kerryon Johnson: The Lions and Matt Patricia want to run the football, but Kerryon has done little to help with that desire. He has only suited up for 18 out of 32 games during his first two NFL seasons. The Lions don't view him as an every down runner. Adding D'Andre Swift in the early 2nd round kills Kerryon's fantasy value. Swift is a versatile back who can do everything Kerryon can do, but do it better. He is also better built to handle the load with a short/stocky build. Kerryon is now nothing more than a handcuff.

Damien Williams: The Chiefs GM asked Patrick Mahomes who he wanted in this draft and supposedly Mahomes just gave him one name, "Clyde". Apparently they don't need a GM. 😂 Clyde is an extremely versatile back and the best receiving back in this draft class. I still think Damien will get some work, but his days as a RB2 are over. This is "Clyde's" team now.

Darrell Henderson: Last season the hype for Henderson was HUGE. The former Memphis back had one of the best yards per carry (8.9) we had ever seen, and the Rams traded up to grab him in the early third round. Then the Rams decided to give him a whopping 39 rushing attempts and 6 total targets. Then they added Cam Akers in the 2nd round. An athletic back with good size and receiving ability who was very good on a bad team at FSU. That should tell you all you need to know about how the Rams view Henderson. I think he has some value as a 3rd down back because of his ability, but I don't see much more than that for him this year or long term.
